BRIEF HISTORY OF EGBADO COLLEGE ILARO

Egbado College was founded in 1951 as the first Secondary Grammar School in the whole of the then Egbado Division. This was the fruit of the seed planted by the Egbado Union. (Based in Lagos) which mobilized the Egbado people to start contributing one shilling (10k) as far back as 1943 towards establishing this Community School.

The first set of students resumed in January, 1951 and resided in a rented Hostel in the town from where they had to trek to the College site about four kilometers away. Other hostels were rented in the town for subsequent classes till 1954 when the first Dormitory block was constructed on the College Campus.

The foundation Principal of the college was Chief J.A. Ola Odebiyi who carried on the pioneering duties until 1956 when higher state assignment made it imperative for him to relinquish the post to become the then Western Region Minister for Education. Mr. W.O. Akingbola (an official of the Regional Ministry of Education) became the “Deputy Principal” until the beginning of 1957, when Mr. J.S. Ibikunle took over as the Acting Principal till Mr. J. Colins Humphrey’s arrival in September 1957. The other Principals that have served in the College were Messrs S.A. Ibikunle, Mr. Kunle Adejumo, Mr. Adesina, Alh. S. O. Up to late 70s the College was fully residential for both boys and girls – a phenomenon which enhanced the disciplines and environmental cleanliness of the school. It is necessary to mention that electricity was brought to recommend it for the introduction of the Higher School Certificate Course in January, 1965.

A member of the AIONIAN Group of Secondary Schools, Egbado College won the over-all Shield for the first time in 1960, and repeated the feat thereafter six (6) successive times. A similar history could be of its performance on Grier and Hussey Shield competitions. She was also well known for her brilliant performance in Football.
